Q: What led you to work in your particular field of medicine?

Answer:  My desire to help people and make a difference in their lives started me in my nursing career 21 years ago.  My first nursing degree was from Penn State Mont Alto in 1997.  I completed my BSN from Chamberlain College of Nursing in 2012 and completed my MSN, FNP degree from Widener University this year.

While I have a family history of diabetes mellitus Type 2, having my own child diagnosed with DM Type 1 at 10 years old started my desire to help those who have been diagnosed with DM2 and DM1.  During my time as a critical care nurse, I found that I had a knack for working with newly diagnosed diabetes patients as well as helping those who had already been diagnosed to understand how this disease impacted their overall health and wellness.  I am extremely fortunate to be able to work at my dream job in Endocrinology with an incredible group of physicians, nurse practitioners and office staff.

Q: What drew you to begin practicing in the Franklin County area?

Answer:  Franklin County is my home.  I grew up in Waynesboro and have extended family located within Franklin County and Washington County, Md.  Not having to commute 50 minutes to work is nice, too.

Q: What would you say is a common misconception about your particular field of medicine?

Answer: That because nurse practitioners don’t have as many years of schooling as physicians that we must be substandard in our care.  This is simply not true.  Nurse Practitioner outcomes are excellent as evidenced by national benchmarks and governing bodies.

I consider myself part of the healthcare team.  When we all work together the patients reap the benefits.

Q: What are you most looking forward to about working in Franklin County?

Answer:  Working directly with my home community.  I consider it a privilege to care for the people of Franklin County and surrounding areas.

Q: What hobbies or interests do you enjoy outside of your career?

Answer:  Fast cars and motorcycles.  My husband and I enjoy taking our Harley Davidson touring cycle for a ride as often as we can.  I also enjoy watching movies, reading for fun, spending time with my adult children and their spouse/significant other as well as my large extended family.  Went on my first vacation this summer in over 10 years to the beach and my husband and I attended the NASCAR experience where we each got to ride along in a stock car at top short track speed.  Looking forward to more travel in the future.
