Q: What led you to become a midwife?
I am coming from the Carlisle area where I worked as a full-scope midwife for the last two and a half years alongside a group of wonderful physicians and midwives.
Growing up, I always had this desire to help and care for people, which led me to nursing school. Nursing school allowed me to provide the compassion and attention to the patients that I desired, but the patients were in and out of my care so quickly it was difficult to create a relationship or bond.
It was during the births of my three nieces that I realized women's health was an area I could see myself loving. And so I headed to Georgetown University after I graduated nursing school and got my Master's as a nurse-midwife.
And now, there isn't a day that goes by where I am not completely in love with what I do and the patients that I meet.
Q: What drew you to begin practicing in the Fulton & Franklin Counties area?
My roots have always been in Waynesboro as I was born and raised here. My parents and grandparents still reside in the area. I grew up in the community and was even a candy striper at the Waynesboro Hospital during high school.
I've always felt a lot of support within the community while I was growing up and it is exciting to return to the area and share my passion for women and babies.
Q: What would you say is a common misconception people have about midwifery?
One of the biggest misconceptions about certified nurse midwives is that we deliver babies at home when in reality, majority of CNMs deliver in the hospital setting.
Another common misconception is that we only care for pregnant woman. Although pregnancy and delivery is a large component of our job, we also care for women of all ages for their annual exams, contraception, STD testing, and much more!
Q: What are you most looking forward to at the practice?
I'm looking forward to being a part of the midwifery growth in this area and continuing to educate women of all ages.
I am excited to continue to learn and grow in my profession and to meet new patients. I really enjoy the bond and relationship I create because it feels like I'm seeing old friends rather than patients. They are what make my job as enjoyable as it is.
Q: What hobbies or interests do you enjoy outside of work?
I currently reside in Hagerstown, MD, with my husband, Mike and our dog, Frank. We are currently preparing for the arrival of our first baby, a boy, in September!
My hobbies include crafts, reading, and spending time with family and friends.
