MERCERSBURG, Pa. – Summit Primary Care – Mercersburg Health Center is pleased to welcome Dr. Joseph McDermott to the practice.

A graduate of Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, McDermott originally studied to become a neurosurgeon before changing fields to study family medicine.

“I realized that I really enjoyed interacting with all people from kids to the elderly,” he said. “I wanted to be able to meet the patients and explain things to them. I’m really looking forward to working with a new group of people and becoming a part of the community.”

One thing patients don’t always understand, McDermott said, is the range of services family doctors can offer – including osteopathic medicine and women’s health options, including birth control.

For McDermott that means patients that might typically see a chiropractor for an issue can visit his office instead. He’s also certified to offer nexplanon arm implantation birth control for women looking for alternative options.

Outside of work, McDermott is a huge sports fan – especially the Ravens and Orioles. He also enjoys riding jet skis, eating seafood, watching movies and collecting retro video games.

“Also, I love history and was a history minor in college so I’m excited to learn more about the Civil War and the rich history of this area.”
