CHAMBERSBURG, Pa - Members of the Summit Bariatric Services Support Group held their 4th annual Drop Your Drawers fashion show on Wednesday, June 4 in Chambersburg.
For the fashion show, support group members displayed clothes that they wore before their weight-loss surgery.
According to Louise Johnston, clinical dietitian for Summit Surgical Group – Chambersburg and support group leader, this group has a lot to be proud of - the total of 10 participants in the fashion show have a combined weight loss of more than 1,100 pounds since their weight-loss surgeries.
“The weight loss represents a tremendous personal effort to change eating and activity patterns,” Johnston said. “Our patients have worked hard and will reap long term benefits of a healthier lifestyle.”
In front of a packed conference room at Summit Health Center-Building 2 in Chambersburg, 10 bariatric patients shared their weight-loss stories including their health issues before surgery and their current health status.
“Everyone can see the success of bariatric surgery and how it has changed lives,” Johnston explained. “It’s not just changes in pant size and shirt size. Patients are reducing the number of medications they need to take. Some patients who once had high blood pressure or diabetes no longer have those health issues.”
Johnston and the participants both encouraged those in attendance to think of bariatric surgery as a tool, not a solution.
“Before having surgery, all of these wonderful people had to commit to living a healthier lifestyle. And, I hope we were able to show tonight how well they are doing, and that change is possible.”
