CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. – September is National Fruit and Vegetable Month.  In recognition of the month, Registered Dietitian, Jennifer Ruby offers some tips and benefits in eating fruit and vegetables.

“Fruits and Vegetables provide an essential amount of vitamins, minerals, and fiber that can help reduce the risk of cancer, diabetes, heart disease, and obesity,” Ruby said.

Standard serving sizes for fruit are a 4 inch banana, 15 grapes, 1 small fruit (the size of a tennis ball), 1 cup fresh fruit or a ½ cup of canned fruit in light syrup.  Standard serving sizes for vegetables are 1 cup of raw vegetables or ½ cup of cooked vegetables.

Fruits and vegetables can be included in meals and snacks.  Try to buy fruits and vegetables in season for the best taste and they are usually less expensive.  Buying from the local farmers’ markets is a great source of seasonal produce.
