SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – When you see your primary care physician, is it usually a visit to a fix a problem – seasonal allergies, cold or flu, rash?
Did you know that primary care providers are also trained in preventative care and developing a plan for life-long health and wellness?
What is the risk?
Preventative care helps your provider find potential health problems before there are life-threatening complications, according to Kyline Keefer, certified registered nurse practitioner at Summit Primary Care – Shippensburg Medical Campus.
According to the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention, chronic conditions, such as heart disease, stroke, cancer, diabetes, obesity, and arthritis are the most common and the most preventable health problems.
Even though these conditions are preventable, chronic conditions still accounted for seven of the top 10 causes of death in 2010, according to the CDC. In fact, heart disease and cancer alone accounted for nearly 48 percent of all deaths in 2010.
What can I do?
The first step is to establish a primary care provider if you do not already have one, Keefer said. Summit Health offers primary care at 10 convenient locations across Franklin County.
“Once you have a primary care provider you’ll want to make an appointment annually for a wellness visit,” she said. “During your wellness visit, your provider can make sure immunizations are up-to-date, order lab tests or exams, and refill prescriptions.”
Services can include:
- Blood pressure, diabetes and cholesterol tests
- Cancer screenings, such as mammograms and colonoscopies
- Wellness care for healthy habits, including exercise, diet, sleep & nutrition
- Immunizations including seasonal flu and pneumonia
