WAYNESBORO, Pa. – Dr. Mawuli Brosius recently started practicing at Summit Women’s Group in Waynesboro and she’s on a mission to help make women understand the importance of getting their annual exam – even when they’re not due for a Pap test.
“Women need to come in for that screening – there are things I can pick up before your next Pap test,” Dr. Brosius explained, noting the practice gives patients a full physical examination in addition to the standard gynecologic and breast exams.
“We need to make sure there are no lesions; no a-typical bleeding; no abnormalities in the cervix and ovaries; and no bladder or pelvic prolapse,” she added.
Dr. Brosius chose Summit Women’s Group in Waynesboro because of its midwife model and the relationships the model fosters between providers and their patients.
“I wanted a very intimate practice where the provider and patient had a close bond,” she explained.
She said that through use of the midwife model at the practice, providers work side-by-side in the interest of the best outcomes.
“We all have a role to play for the best benefit of the patient. We have mutual respect and understanding as we collaborate in bringing our own knowledge for the best possible care.”
Dr. Brosius has two young children and enjoys having that in common with many of her patients.
“Having kids, myself, I can share that experience with my patients and can relate to what they are going through.”
She noted the best things expectant women can do is maintain a healthy diet, exercise and take a prenatal vitamin and said they should never forget to enjoy the process.
“You should really start taking a prenatal vitamin before you become pregnant,” said Dr. Brosius. “And, you should enjoy your journey.”
