  • Visitors are required to provide photo identification prior to visiting a patient in Family Birthing or Level II NICU.
  • All visitors will receive a visitor badge and will be required to wear the badge while visiting.

Visitor Guidelines

  • Visitors identifed as family or support person(s) are welcome to visit at any time and spend the night.
  • Young visitors should be a accompanied by an adult.
  • To avoid tiring our patients, no more than two people should visit at one time.
  • Please limit the length of your stay, in order to make time for other visitors.
  • Visitors may be asked to leave the room during examination and treatment.
  • Visiting waiting areas are provided on each floor and in the main lobby.
  • The patient’s provider has the right to limit visitors for medical reasons.
  • To protect those with latex allergies, please do not bring or send latex balloons to patients.

Cell Phones & Wireless Devices

To protect the safety of our patients, wireless devices should be turned off while you're in the following areas:

  • Cardiac Catheterization Lab on the 1st floor
  • MRI area on the ground floor
  • Operating Room (OR) on the 1st floor

If you're uncertain, please speak with a nurse to find out if wireless devices are permitted in your area of the hospital.

Free wireless connection and access to the internet via your smart phones, tablets and laptops.

Tobacco/Vape Free

Tobacco, vapor and electronic cigarettes are not allowed in our hospital or on hospital property.

Vending Area

Vending machines, accessible 24 hours a day for snacks and beverages, are located in the emergency department waiting area and on the ground floor.

Public restrooms are located on the ground floor, and adjacent to the main lobby on the first floor.

Chapel & Chaplain Service

You may request a visit from our chaplain by calling (717) 267-3000 ext. 7749 or by asking your nurse. Our chaplain’s office can also contact your local clergy if you’d like. A chaplain is on call 24-hours-a-day.

An interfaith chapel, open 24 hours-a-day, is located on the first floor by the main lobby.

Family HOSPITALity

For out-of-town emergency patients, we offer the Family HOSPITALity program which gives discount rates at several local motels. Pets can be cared for on an emergency basis through special arrangements with several veterinarians. Ask a member of the hospital staff for more information.


We will make every effort to provide interpreters for those patients who do not speak English. For information, call Social Services at (717) 267-7156.

Latex Free

Although we are not totally latex free, we are able to care for those who are latex sensitive. To further protect those with latex sensitivities, we also ask visitors to avoid sending latex balloons to patients.

Lost & Found

Personal items found on Hospital property are kept in a safe, secure place until they are claimed, up to one month. To inquire about a lost item, please ask your nurse to check with lost and found.

Courtesy Phones

Courtesy phones are available for use in the main lobby. TDD is available at the cashier’s desk.

Service Animals

A "service animal" is any guide dog, signal dog, or other animal individually trained to do work or perform tasks for the benefit of an individual with a disability. If an animal meets this definition, it is considered a service animal under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the Pennsylvania Human Relations Act (PHRA), regardless of the animals licensing or certification.

Persons who use service animals may be accompanied by their service animals during their visit to this facility regardless of whether the animals are working or performing their tasks at all times.

Service animals may be separated from their owners in areas where special air filtration is required, or the general public must take special precautions that a service animal could not take, including hand washing or wearing gowns, gloves, and masks.

Patient Info

Your care team will be led by our Hospitalists, who specialize in hospital medicine. They will oversee your care while you're here and will be in contact with your Primary Care Doctor to provide progress updates on your health, so that they can easily resume your care after you leave the hospital.

At the time of your admission to Chambersburg Hospital, your primary care physician will provide records about your illness. The process is no different than a referral to a specialist for another opinion, or for additional tests and treatment.

Our History

1895 - Chambersburg Hospital opened at 217 South Main Street. It had 9 beds - 3 private rooms, a 3-bed ward for women, and a 3-bed ward for men.
1905 - A new 35-bed, hospital opened on Lincoln Way East. It was staffed by 9 physicians
1922 - The hospital expanded to 90 beds following a $100,000 addition
1950 - A new hospital opened. It included 101 adult beds, a 30-bed pediatric department, and a 32-bed maternity unit
1958 - An expansion created a total of 229 beds and 32 bassinets - nearly double the size of the average Pennsylvania Hospital at that time
1968 - A $3 million addition was completed, raising the hospital's capacity to 320 beds. The first hospital building on Lincoln Way East was raised
1981 - A new 21-bed Critical Care Unit opened
1983 - A new 6-bed Psychiatric Unit opened
1985 - The Psychiatric Unit expanded to 20 beds (from 6)
1986 - A 20-bed Rehabilitation Unit opened
1992 - Construction began on a $25 million expansion and renovation project focusing on Outpatient, Rehabilitation, Emergency, and Women's services
1994 - Chambersburg Hospital announced plans to affiliate with Waynesboro Hospital. The parent organization was named Summit Health
2004 - Chambersburg Hospital established an Interventional Cardiology program
2008 - Chambersburg Hospital adds a voice-activated Operating Room. The system's name is "Sidne."
2010 - Chambersburg Hospital adds a $1.6 million Robotic Surgery system. This new surgery method helps patients heal faster with less pain
2012 - The hospital's Wound Care Center expands to create more treatment areas. The Wound Care Center also adds 2 hyperbaric oxygen therapy chambers
2012 - In December, construction of the new King Street addition is complete. The addition added 171 fully private patient rooms and a new, expanded Cardiology Catheterization Lab.
2015 - The hospital adds a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) Level II.
The current hospital has 285 beds.

We understand families and caregivers can have dilemmas or questions that arise about the care or health of their loved one, such as:

  • What is the right thing to do?
  • Can I decline treatment for myself or for my loved one?

We want you to know that you are not alone in making these decisions, that's why we offer you a free, ethics consultation with our ethics committee.

The Chambersburg Hospital Ethics Committee consists of members of the medical staff, board of directors, senior leaders, pastoral services, nurses, and community representatives, who are able to consult you and communicate directly with the doctors, nurses and others involved in the patient’s care.

You can request an ethics consultation by asking your case manager, nurse or nurse supervisor to send the request to the Ethics Committee.

Prepare for an Ethics Consultation

Before the ethics consultation, it would be helpful to consider how you would answer the following questions:

  • Are the patient’s wishes known? If not, what do you think they would want?
  • Does the patient have an Advanced Directive such as a living will or a power of attorney?
  • What are the family’s and/or surrogate’s concerns?

The Ethics Committee will share options, opinions and patient-care suggestions. The final decision however, will be made by you, your family, and/or your surrogate (after discussion with your doctor).

Pastoral Care Services

  • 24-hour on-call chaplaincy services
  • Clinical pastoral care training and monthly continuing education for clergy and laity
  • Internships available for seminary and religious institution students
  • Training for grief support group facilitators
  • Notification upon request to appropriate faith community or religious group that one of their members is hospitalized and desires a visit
  • 24-hour computer access to hospitalized church members
  • Staff chaplain available for religious services, preaching, counseling and as a resource for various religious areas

The interfaith chapel and meditation room is located on the first floor near the main lobby. Open 24-hours to people of all faiths. Prayer request forms are also available.

Research Library

Our research library is open to the public and features collections of books, journals, audiovisual materials, and periodicals. Our collection has over 4,000 titles from all medical areas including the basic sciences, pharmacology, psychiatry, nursing, rehabilitation, allied health, healthcare administration, business leadership, and consumer health. We also offer you quiet area with workstations with Internet access.
