At Summit Behavioral Health, we're committed to providing individualized treatment for patients in crisis in safe, supportive environment at the Chambersburg Hospital. We also provide short-term care for patients with a primary behavioral health diagnosis (mental health) who are not responsive to outpatient treatment.

Our team of health care professionals are here for you by providing round the clock, one-on-one supervision for patients who are at risk for harm to self or others.

Patient Information

General Information

We are here to help make your stay as pleasant as possible. Please let us know if there is anything we can do to improve your stay.

  • Each day you will be given the opportunity to select your menu for the next day
  • You will be given the opportunity to do your laundry every other day
  • Each morning you will be asked to set a goal for the day. You will then have the opportunity to review your goal at the end of the day

Group Therapy

A group therapy schedule will be provided to each patient. The schedule will be posted daily on the white board in each hallway. Participation in group therapy is highly recommended as an important part of your treatment here.

Care Coordination/Discharge Planning

The BHU Care Coordination Team consists of social workers and registered nurses. To assist you in continuing your recovery, care coordination staff will help set up appointments and make referrals for services including: medication assistance, psychiatry, drug and alcohol services, and case management. In addition, they may be able to help with assisted living and long term care arrangements.

If you have services arranged prior to entering the hospital, you may not need to work with the care coordination staff. Your nurse will provide you with details regarding your follow-up appointments and referrals, along with any prescriptions you may need, when you are being discharged from the


The use of tobacco and other products used for smoking in any form by any person is prohibited at all Chambersburg Hospital facilities. Your physician can order nicotine replacement.


The staff will follow the guidelines set forth in Chapter 5100 of the Mental Health Procedures Act of Pennsylvania concerning confidentiality. Information about clients will not be released without their permission. Staff will follow all state and federal confidentiality regulations including information sharing in emergency situations.

Grievance and Appeal Procedure

Please address your concerns directly to any member of your treatment team. If you wish to make a formal complaint, you may obtain a patient concern form from any staff member. Completed forms can be submitted to any staff member. If you prefer to file your complaint verbally, a member of your treatment team can complete the form on your behalf. Your concern will be addressed and you will receive a response within 24 business hours. For unresolved issues or concerns, please request to speak with a manager.

Patient Rights

Bill of Rights (from Mental Health Procedures Act of Pennsylvania)

You have the right to be treated with dignity and respect. You shall retain all civil rights that have been specifically curtailed by a court of law.

You have the right to be treated with dignity and respect.

You have the right to unrestricted and private communication inside and outside this facility, including the following rights:

  • To a peaceful assembly and to join with other patients to organize a body of, or participate in patient government when patient government has been determined feasible by the facility.
  • To be assisted by any advocate of your choice in the assertion of your rights, and to see a lawyer in private at any time. A directory of legal and advocacy services in the area is posted on the bulletin boards throughout the unit and is available for your use. You can request a copy from any staff member.
  • To make complaints and to have your complaints heard and adjudicated promptly.
  • To receive visitors of your own choice at reasonable hours unless your treatment team has determined in advance that a visitor or visitors would seriously interfere with your or others' treatment or welfare.
  • To receive and send unopened letters and to have outgoing letters stamped and mailed. Incoming mail may be examined for good reason in your presence for contraband. Contraband means specific property which entails a threat to your health and welfare or the hospital community.
  • To have access to a telephone designated for patient use.
  • You have the right to practice the religion of your choice or abstain from religious practices.
  • You have the right to keep and to use personal possessions; unless it has been determined that specific personal property is contraband. The reasons for imposing any limitation and its scope must be clearly defined, recorded and explained to you. You have the right to sell any personal article you made and to keep the proceeds from its sale.
  • You have the right to handle your personal affairs, including making contracts, holding a driver's license or professional license, marrying, or obtaining a divorce and writing a will.
  • You have the right to participate in the development and review of your treatment plan.
  • You have the right to receive treatment in the least restrictive setting within the facility necessary to accomplish the treatment goals.
  • You have the right to be discharged from the facility as soon as you no longer need care and treatment.
  • You have the right not to be subjected to harsh or unusual treatment.
  • If you have been involuntarily committed in accordance with civil court proceedings, and you are not receiving treatment, and you are not dangerous to yourself or others, and you can survive safely in the community, you have the right to be discharged from the facility.
  • You have the right to be paid for any work you do which benefits the operation and maintenance of the facility in accordance with existing federal wage and hour regulations.

  • To receive services at this facility, and be referred for services at other facilities, without regard to your race, color, religious creed, disability, national origin, age, or sex.

Methods available include, but are not limited to, equipment redesign, the provision of aids, and the use of alternative service delivery locations. Structural modifications will be considered only as a last resort among available methods.

Visitor Information

Visiting hours are:

  • Monday - Friday, 6-8 p.m.
  • Saturday & Sunday, 1-2:30 p.m. & 6-8 p.m.

Visitation policies

  • Visitors must secure their personal belongings (purses, cell phones, etc.) in a locker provided prior to visiting patient.
  • Children under the age of 18 may not visit except in the case of therapeutic reason, and a provider’s order is required.
  • Visitors for patients on the east hall (ICU wing) must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Individualized visiting hours may be arranged for older adult patients 65 years of age or older according to patient and family needs.
  • Violations of our contraband policy by a visitor may result in a loss of visiting privileges.
  • Patients may not receive visitors during group sessions. Please contact the unit for group times.
  • Visitors may be required to show picture identification prior to visiting.
  • All items brought in by visitors for patients are subject to search.

Our treatment team consists of board certified adult, child, and geropsychiatric psychiatrists, nurses, nursing assistants, occupational therapists and certified occupational therapy assistants, registered nurse counselors, and a nurse manager.
