CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. – Patients needing gallbladder removal surgery now have more options with the use of the da Vinci Si robotic surgical system.

Dr. David S. Bryant of Summit Surgical Group – Chambersburg has begun offering single-site incision surgery.

“It’s a different way of doing the procedure,” Bryant said. “I like using the da Vinci robotic system because it allows me to have better control, a clearer image, and more precision.”

During the new procedure, the patient’s gallbladder is removed through a one-inch incision in the belly button, making the surgery virtually scarless. Previously, surgeries required between three and five small incisions.

Other potential benefits of the single-site procedure include a reduction in pain, less blood loss, faster recovery, and a shorter hospital stay.

“Single-site robotic surgery eliminates all but one tiny incision,” said Betsy Harnish, director of surgical services at Summit Health. “Having just one incision allows the patient faster recovery and less pain.”

Dr. Bryant is one of a group of surgeons in the country who have received training to perform the surgery.

He spent several weeks learning to use the robotic surgical system first to complete traditional multi-site removals and then moving on to single-site removals as well.

During the procedure, the surgeon sits at a console viewing a 3-D, high definition image of the patient’s anatomy. Using controls below the viewer, the surgeon moves the instrument arms and camera performing the surgery in real-time.

“Our top priority is always safety, but now we can offer patients a minimally invasive procedure that does look nice as well,” Bryant said.
