It is World Breastfeeding Week, a time to recognize the health benefits of breastfeeding for both mom and baby. Members of the Chambersburg Hospital Family Birthing Unit and Waynesboro Hospital Family Birthing Unit offer year-round breastfeeding support for new mothers.

Suzy Wilkinson IBCLC is a board-certified lactation consultant leading breastfeeding mothers in Franklin County through their new journey. Suzy shares five of the many benefits to breastfeeding.

  1. Breastfeeding can help protect mom against illness. Mothers who breastfeed have a lower risk of breast and ovarian cancers, Type 2 Diabetes, and high blood pressure. Breastfeeding can also help mom heal faster from delivery and lose pregnancy weight faster.
  2. Healthy Baby. Babies who are breastfed have a lower risk of asthma, type 2 diabetes, infections, obesity and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). Breastmilk is full of antibodies and vitamins. It is also easy for the baby to digest.
  3. Best Nutrition. Breast milk is the best source of nutrition for babies and is unique to every om and baby. As the baby grows, a mother’s milk will change to meet baby’s nutritional needs.  The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends “exclusive breastfeeding” for the first six months of a baby’s life.
  4. Special Bond. Mothers who breastfeed have the opportunity to form a special bond with their baby. Successful breastfeeding includes holding baby skin to skin for many hours a day, use that time to talk to baby and smile!
  5. Saves Time and Money. Compared to the cost of formula, breastmilk is free! Breastfeeding will save you trips to the store and ultimately give your bank account a break.

Keystone 10

WellSpan Chambersburg Hospital and WellSpan Waynesboro Hospital are working toward the completion of the Keystone 10 initiative.

This project is a PA Department of Health effort to bring awareness to the benefits of breastfeeding to families and give them the support they need as new parents. To succeed, the program has given a 10-step approach to transforming state birthing facilities to better educate and support mothers and babies.
