Tips on healthy holiday eating

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. – With the holiday season quickly approaching, are you worried about overeating? Dr. Paul Klink with Summit Weight Management Services has provided some tips to help avoid holiday party overeating.

The average American consumes about 4,500 calories from eating a traditional Thanksgiving dinner, Klink said.

“Most Americans gain 1 to 2 pounds during the holiday season, which doesn’t seem like a lot but that adds up year after year,” Klink explained.

To prevent overindulgence at those holiday parties, Klink has a few quick tips:

  • Eat a healthy snack before you go to dinner
  • Bring a low-calorie food item
  • Position yourself away from the food table
  • Drink low-calorie beverage
  • Use a smaller plate
  • Be aware of your hunger/fullness meter

“It is also important to remember to eat slowly and enjoy the food,” Klink said.”  Take the time between bites to share stories with everyone.”

“Lastly, don’t forget that exercise can help to maintain weight or can help prevent weight gain during the holiday season,” he added. “It can be as simple as going for a walk after the meal to burn off those extra calories.  You want to be able to enjoy your holiday without feeling guilty about overeating.”
