Our Doors Are Always Open
The doors of Waynesboro Hospital have never closed since the hospital was established by volunteers in 1922 when the local community was affected by the Spanish Influenza.
The disease killed more than 20 million people worldwide including 40 Waynesboro residents.
In 1922, the hospital had 35 beds. In 1939, the addition of a new wing on the west end of the building more than doubled the hospital's capacity to 78 beds. A second expansion in 1962 increased the hospital's capacity to 105 beds.
A Coronary Care Unit was opened in 1970, but it was replaced two years later by a six-bed Intensive Care Unit.
A major renovation in 1980 reduced the hospital's capacity to 88 beds. This reflected the trend toward providing more outpatient services.
In 1995, Waynesboro Hospital became part of the Summit Health family. Summit Health is also the parent organization to Chambersburg Hospital and more than 40 physician practices and other services throughout Franklin County and surrounding areas.
Nearly all Summit Health affiliates are non-profit organizations including both hospitals.
In October 2008, Waynesboro Hospital received national recognition when it was named America's No. 1 Best Place to Work in Healthcare by Modern Healthcare magazine.
Today, Waynesboro Hospital is a 64-bed facility offering a comprehensive selection of services. The hospital is staffed by about 175 physicians, more than 600 staff members, and over 200 volunteers.
